HotHeads music incorporates elements of folk and country music, but is mostly about rock and roll.  Our
sound has been characterized as "folk rock" by local music writers, but we prefer the term "roots rock."
(Basically the same thing as folk rock, but with a little harder edge).

We have recorded an 8-track CD entitled "Kill the Pain."  It can be purchased for $8 postpaid from this
website  (on the "Contact Us" sub-page).  You can also play or download selected tracks from the CD via
a link on this site (below on this sub-page).  We also contributed a track to the "H.O.M.E." CD released by
Signalpath Records.  It can be purchased from
www.signalpathrecords.com.

Our music has been well-received critically.  J. Maggio, reviewing the H.O.M.E. CD for Satellite Magazine
(Nov. 2003 issue), included the Hotheads' "cool folk-rock" among the highlight tracks on the 42-song
double-disk compilation of recordings by Gainesville-area bands.  The Hotheads' debut 8-song CD, "Kill
the Pain," received a
"five star" review   from the Gainesville Sun.  Reviewer Douglas Jordan wrote: "The
group's debut CD ... is an eight-song collection heavy on mid-tempo folk rock, not to mention a trip
through some of the best original music coming out of Gainesville....  [E]very song on the album is built
on a solid hook, and the production is top-notch for a locally recorded CD....  I gotta give this one five out
of five stars.  It's that good."

LYRICS

Here are the lyrics to all the songs the HotHeads have recorded, as well as a few
that we haven’t yet recorded, but which we play at some or all of our live shows.
They are listed by title in alphabetical order.

(All songs written by Hoyt Walston -- (BMI))

THE FUNDAMENTALIST SONG
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

Well I went down to the dance club one Saturday night.
I was hoping to find some sweet young thing to maybe treat me right.
But before I could get myself inside, this preacher barred the door
and said “ya’ ain’t allowed to come in here anymore.”
He said “dancing is against the word of our Heavenly Lord,
and I know you know that this is true ‘cause I’ve told you many times before.
It’s long past time that we shut down this den of sin and sorrow,
and I’ll see you all in church tomorrow.”

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

Fundamentalists don’t believe in smoking or drinking or sex.
No wonder they’re always so uptight.  A bunch of nervous wrecks.
And people eating lobsters has no place in God’s grand Creation.
It’s not just a sin, its an Abomination!

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

Fundamentalists around the world are the same, near and far.
Jerry Falwell.  Pat Robertson.  Mullah Omar.
It’s not enough for them to follow their restrictive rules themselves.
They’ve gotta try to impose ‘em on everyone else.
Fundamentalists think life on earth is just a vale of tears.
They follow rigid rules of conduct handed down for many years.
But what gives them the right to tell other people what to do?
I’ve got a problem with that.  What about you?

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

I HATE YOUR GUTS
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

I wanted you.
I needed you in my life.
But you went away, far away.
And when I think about you now it cuts like a knife.

I really loved you.
I told you I’d love you forever.
But you said “no way, no how.”
Well you were right about that ‘cause I don’t love you now.

Oh I wanted you really bad.
For you I would’ve given up everything that I had.
But you said I wasn’t good enough
For somebody like you.  You think you’re hot stuff.
I once adored you. Now I abhor you.
I really hate your guts.

I know about pain.
I’ve seen it before and I’ll see it again.
But nothing makes me feel like I do
When I’m puking out my guts after thinking of you.

I really hate you.
My hatred grows with each passing day.
I’m having a hard time expressing myself,
so I guess I must hate you more than words can say.

Oh I wanted you really bad.
For you I would’ve given up everything that I had.
But you said I wasn’t good enough
For somebody like you.  You think you’re hot stuff.
I once adored you.  Now I abhor you.
I really hate your guts.

JUST WHAT I NEED
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

When I was alone, you took me by the hand
When I’d fallen, you showed me how to stand
When things seemed all wrong, you came along and made them right
When I saw only darkness, you showed me the light

I was down and feeling kind of blue
I was so confused, I didn’t know what to do
When things seemed hopeless, you came along and saved the day
When I’d lost my direction, you showed me the way

I cannot say how much I need you
As much as I need to breathe the air
It doesn’t matter the reason that I call
When I need you by my side, I know you will be there

When I was a cynic you showed me how to dream
When I felt like a king, you were there to be my queen
When I was a prisoner you came along and set me free
When I was blind you taught me to see

I cannot count the ways I need you
You are everything to me
It doesn’t matter the reason that I call
I know you’ll be right by my side being just what I need you to be

And when I’m old I know you’ll be there too
No matter what life brings, I can count on you
It seems to be my destiny
Wherever I go, you’ll be there with me

KILL THE PAIN
(a/k/a The Lobotomy Song)
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

We’re stuck on this world all alone.
And like a dog in search of a bone,
we struggle hard all our lives to get by.
And when the time has come to go,
it seems we’ve got little there to show for it.
It’s enough to make you break down and cry.
But I couldn’t tell you
what I was thinking about
when I saw my girl with another guy.

I need a bottle in front of me
or a frontal lobotomy.
I need me some therapy
to help me kill this pain.
I won’t go back again.
I can’t hear a word you’re saying
(La-La-La-La-La-La).
I won’t play the game you’re playing.

We once thought that we could change the world.
Make life better for every boy and girl.
But from the beginning we never had a chance.
Cause life’s not as easy as it seems.
Things rarely turn out like in our dreams.
Cinderella never gets invited to the dance.
But I couldn’t tell you
what I was thinking about
when I saw my dreams lie in shattered ruins.

I need a bottle in front of me.
Or a frontal lobotomy.
I need me some therapy
to help me kill this pain.
I won’t go back again.
I can’t hear a word you’re saying
(La-La-La-La-La-La).
I won’t play the game you’re playing.
(La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La)

THE LOVE THAT I’VE FOUND
(Recorded on Signalpath Records’ “H.O.M.E.” CD  -- a compilation of recordings
by 42 Gainesville-area bands to benefit the H.O.M.E. Van project).

If the government was to stop governing, I could go on with my life.
And if the stock market fell and never rose again, I’d find a way to survive.
But if you went away, I don’t know what I’d do,
because my whole world revolves around you.
When it gets right down to the heart of the matter,
the truth of the matter is you’ve stolen my heart.
If the truth be told there’s no truth to be found
except the true love that I’ve found with you

When the sun goes down over my little town and another day’s work is all done,
I come home to you and stretch out on the couch, and I know I’m a fortunate one.
‘Cause I think of the people who live life alone
with nobody to love and no place to call home.
And I know I could easily be one of them
if not for the love that I’ve found with you.

The love that I’ve found is a wondrous thing indeed.
The love that I’ve found gives me everything I need.
And I know I might not even still be around
if not for the love that I’ve found with you.

When I lay myself down at the end of the day, with you by my side on the bed.
I pray to the Lord to look out for my soul if I should soon find myself dead.
And I know that my life here on earth has been blessed and I’m one of the
fortunate few
to have found me a love that’s as pure and as strong as the one that I have here
with you.
When it gets right down to the heart of the matter,
the truth of the matter is you’ve stolen my heart.
If the truth be told there’s no truth to be found
except the true love that I’ve found with you.

When it gets right down to the heart of the matter,
the truth of the matter is I love you.

MEAN GREEN FIGHTING MACHINE
(a/k/a The Hulk Song)
(Unrecorded, but performed at most HotHeads’ live shows)

I’m a mean, green fighting machine.
An engine of destruction.
You might think that you ain’t got much
but let me tell you, I got nothing.

My name was David Banner, but my friends called me Bruce.
Then I turned into the Hulk.  Now I run around on the loose.
I’ve got Thunderbolt Ross breathing down my ass,
and he’s backed up by all the other military brass.
And my pal Rick Jones hates my guts,
and my poor girl Betty kind of thinks that I’m nuts.

I’m just a mean, green fighting machine.
An engine of destruction.
You might think that you ain’t got much
but let me tell you, I got nothing.

I’m a child of the atom.  A product of my age.
My transformation’s triggered
when I give in to rage.
A savage fury dwells within my breast.
I need some peace and quiet
so I can get some rest.

I tell you I get no respect from the superhero crowd.
They think I’m just a show-off, boisterous and loud.
And everybody thinks I’m incapable of good
but I’d really like to be a superhero if I could.

But I’m just a mean, green fighting machine.
An engine of destruction.
You might think that you ain’t got much
but let me tell you, I got nothing.

Superheroes are always on my tail.
They think they can make a name for themselves
if they can bring me in to jail.
I’m perceived as a villain, but I’m really not that bad.
Just don’t make me angry,
‘cause you wouldn’t like me when I’m mad.

I’m the strongest one there is.
Of that there can be no denying.
But I’m not as strong as I can be.
If I said I was, I’d be lying.
‘Cause the madder I get, the stronger I get,
and I’m not quite as mad as I can get quite yet.

I’m just a mean, green, fighting machine.
An engine of destruction.
You might think that you ain’t got much,
but let me tell you, I got nothing.

I can lift up a building or leap through the air for miles.
But my life rarely presents occasion for laughter or for smiles.
So if you think you’ve got it bad,
don’t sit around and sulk.
You know things could be a whole lot worse.
You could be the incredible Hulk.

You could be a mean, green fighting machine.
You could be an engine of destruction.
You might think that you ain’t got much,
but you know, you could have nothing.

You could have Thunderbolt Ross breathing down your ass,
backed up by all the other military brass.
You could have superheroes always on your tail,
just trying their best to bring you into jail.

You could be a mean green fighting machine,
an engine of destruction.
You might think that you ain’t got much,
but at least you still got something.

MR. SMITH SAVES THE WORLD
(a/k/a Laissez fairy tale)
(Unrecorded, but performed at some HotHeads’ live shows)

A long time ago in a place far away,
a guy named Adam Smith was thinking one day.
And he decided that he was gonna try to find a way
to save the world.

He thought if he looked hard enough he would see the light.
So he searched all day and he searched all night.
And he looked to the left and he looked to the right,
but he could not find the secret to making everything all right.
It just wasn’t there.
He couldn’t find it anywhere.

Then he thought of something that he thought might be a clue.
In an ideal world, what’s good for me would be good for you.
And people everywhere could be allowed to do
whatever they want.

He theorized that by trying to get as much as he can,
a person would be helping his fellow man.
He postulated that there was some invisible hand
that’d make everything all right.
He thought he’d finally
seen the light.

His ideas led to economic specialization
and the revolution known as industrialization.
But any hope for real change in the human condition
did not come to be.

He thought pursuit of self-interest was part of God’s scheme,
but his underlying premise was wrong, it would seem.
What’s good for one player ain’t always good for the team
as a whole.
What good is getting ahead
if the cost is losing your soul?

What if God put you on this world just to see what you’d do
when the thing you know is right ain’t the thing that’s best for you?
Maybe the only way to accomplish God’s plan
is caring not about ourselves, but about our fellow man.

So if you want to save the world, love is what you need.
There ain’t no magic formula to make good come out of greed.
The only real answer, as proved countless times,
is if you want to change the world, you got to do it one heart at a time.
One heart at a time.

MY GIRL
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

When I’m feeling down all I’ve got to do is think of my girl
She can make everything seem all right with the world
She can make dark clouds go away
The light from her smile can turn night into day
I can’t say enough no matter how much I say about my girl

When she’s with me everything seems to be all right
Her embrace helps me make it through the darkest night
She really knows how to make my whole day
She means more to me than I could ever pay
I can’t say enough no matter how much I say about my girl

When she smiles at me, I get a funny feeling inside
And when she calls my name, it fills me with a sense of joy that I can’t hide
And when she touches me, it makes me high
I don’t know how she does it
I don’t really care why

I know for the rest of our lives that we will be together
Through sickness and health, poverty and wealth, and all kinds of weather
No matter what happens I know that she’ll say
Times might get tough but she won’t run away
I can’t say enough no matter how much I say about my girl
My girl
My girl oo er oo oo oo oo oo
My girl

SELFISH LITTLE BITCH
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

You’ll do what you think you gotta do.
I know that’s just the way that you are.
I used to play the role of your fool
until you walked away with my heart.

But things are changing now.
The tables are starting to turn.
You’re gonna find out pretty soon.
You’ll get what you deserve.

You said you didn’t mean to hurt nobody.
Other people just got in the way of your plans.
But I got news for you, darling,
I think that I’m somebody,
and I don’t have to take any more of it at your hands.

You think that you’re something special
and you can get anything that you want.
But I got news for you, darling, I think
you’re just a little slut.

You spent your whole life from day one
just trying to have yourself some fun.
But don’t you know when all is said and done,
there’s more to life than looking out for number one.

You took all my love, then threw me away,
Without the slightest regard for my feelings.
But don’t you know you’re gonna have to pay
for all your selfish, lowdown, dirty-rotten dealings.

You think that you’re something special
and you can get anything that you want.
But I got news for you, darling, I think
you’re just a lousy punk.

TONGUE TIED
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

I act like I don’t care for you but it’s not the way it seems
In fact I tend to think of you as a girl right out of my dreams
I’d like to speak my heart to you but the words won’t come when I need ‘em to
So I play it cool to protect my foolish pride

When I’m in the same place as you I have to look away
‘cause once I put my eyes on you I could stare at you all day
you are babe-alicious and I just feel ridiculous
I wish I could think of something clever to say

But I get tongue tied when I’m around you
Can’t find the right thing to say no matter what I do
Words don’t seem to come out quite the way I wanted ‘em to
Cause I get tongue tied just being around you

Maybe someday I can find a way to tell you how I feel
Until that time I guess I’ll have to continue to conceal
The way I feel about you, but it’s hard to be without you
I wish talking to you wasn’t such a big deal

But I get tongue tied when I’m around you
Can’t find the right thing to say no matter what I do
Words don’t seem to come out quite the way I wanted ‘em to
Cause I get tongue tied just being around you
I get tongue tied from just being around you
I get tongue tied when I am around you

ZOMBIE MAN
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

I am just a zombie man
I do the best that a zombie can
To make it through this world of pain and strife
I walk, I talk, I drive a car
I even comb my hair
If you saw me you might think I was alive
But if you look into my eyes you can see there’s nothing there
No hope, no fear, no joy, no sorrow, just an empty stare
A zombie’s got no feelings, but this zombie man don’t care
At least I know I won’t be hurt any more

I was once a man like you
I had a dog and a girlfriend too
I didn’t think I needed anything more
But that girl left me one day
She broke my heart, and it stayed that way
My life ended when she walked out that door
Now my heart don’t beat, and my nerves don’t feel
My existence is somewhat surreal
It’s simple, yet hard to describe
I don’t need friends and I don’t need love
And I don’t expect nothing from God above
I’m undead, but not quite alive

I am just a zombie man
I do the best that a zombie can
To make it through this world of pain and strife
There are so many things that I might do
But so little time to get around to them
Sometimes I wish I was able to decide
But for a zombie free will don’t really exist
Those zombie drums are hard to resist
A zombie man must do as his zombie master commands
A zombie’s work is never done
A zombie’s lot is not much fun
Being undead, but not quite alive
Undead, but not really alive

I have no need for material things
Or the sense of power possession brings
I try not to think of all that I once had
I keep my cool no matter what
I’ve learned it’s not wise to get too hot
My guiding rule is “fire bad”
For a zombie free will doesn’t really exist
Those zombie drums are hard to resist
A zombie man must do as his zombie master commands
A zombie’s work is never done
A zombie’s lot is not much fun
Being undead, but not quite alive
Undead, but not really alive
